it takes more confidence than i have to call anything over or underrated. it's easy to say something is tasteless or poorly made. i cannot be fallible in saying my experience of something was poor, i get to decide that for myself. but to say something is "overrated" not only assumes that my poor experience is an immutable property of the thing itself, but that every other person whose experience varied from my own was grifted into disagreeing with me. it is not me who is wrong about this movie i thought was mid, everyone else is experiencing it incorrectly, and therefore enjoying it!
it just takes a lot of confidence to say something like that
i don't even mean this in a "let people enjoy things" way, i too am vocal about the things i dislike, i just sometimes meet people who are really clearly into being seen as the Decider of the Quality of Benign Things and it's hard to have any conversation with someone who always has their mind made up before speaking.
