i started reading house of leaves today after years of putting it off and two chapters in it has a sort of youtube ARG energy about it

It does, and that's because House of Leaves was what the whole creepypasta/ARG format would crib from.
I have a story about that book. Well, more accurately about my copy of that book. The physical book itself, that is, and not its contents.
