Say what you want about the Moderation Problems the fediverse has conceptually and structurally (and how the real solution to "decentralizing online communication" might be to... simply know where your friends are on multiple services, rather than to specifically use services that are spread out across multiple servers) but I do still think it's super fucked up that we basically know exactly where the current spam nightmare hellwave is coming from and Discord (company with money and policies against using its service like this, theoretically) has taken no action
In a statement to TechCrunch, a Discord spokesperson said, “Discord’s Terms of Service specifically prohibit platform abuse, which refers to activities that disrupt or alter the experience of Discord users, including spam, or sending unsolicited bulk messages or interactions.” Though Discord says it is monitoring the situation, the server responsible for the spam attacks remains online.
i think it's interesting that someone from discord actually did reach out and say something, because usually this sort of stuff gets no comment
and yet,
Unmaintained/poorly maintained servers acting as gateways to the network through which spammers can operate with impunity because no one wants to sideline a couple dozen servers because of one user.
(TBH I never got the spam wave and the server I'm on did block all those unmoderated servers, but like, there's no central quick-reaction authority to handle this at scale.)
Then you get shit like this where Discord is going "if you want us to act against spammers, move everything to our servers, then if you get spammed we'll take action. It's so lovely in our garden walls :)"
