Poking stuff about my handheld radio project. I kinda wanted to throw in IR since the main uC supports it. Up to 4Mbps isn't bad, but like... the form factor limits where an IR transceiver can be placed in a useful manner. Only uses I can think of are:

  1. Sharing contact info/files
  2. Yet Another Network Link
  3. Debug port
  4. Compatibility with old PDAs or something
  5. Use a remote control to control it
  6. Use as a remote control

3-5 can work if the IR transceiver is on the front of it, assuming you have it vertical. That's not a bad assumption for those situations.

1-2 could be
A) on the front for automatic sharing if you have it strapped to your front, you couldn't reliably use the UI to manage it though
B) on the rear if you set them up across from each other, back to back
C) on the top if you lay them down on a table, except there's no real room for it on top
D) on the bottom, same as the top except there might be room, but it could get dirty/scuffed easily being placed standing-up, and the UI would be upside down if you need to do anything
E) on the sides, as long as you're not holding it as your hand would block it

6 would be on top, probably, and as with (C) there's no room for it.

Any thoughts on potential uses for an infrared data link that's not better off just using Bluetooth or WiFi?
