The CoHost MUCK
Okay, to actually put meat into this, rather than just hrming at something, I do support the idea of more MUCK stuff. Not sure where folks would go, but I do regularly go to Spindizzy MUCK which is... honestly a bit on the silly side but Very Active much of the time.
Oh, interesting! I wasn't aware of Spindizzy MUCK at all, and I'll have to take a closer look for certain. Silly is absolutely my vibe frequently, if I'm being honest about it. Thank you!
It's a very nice place that's pretty much accepting of any character concept you can think of. It does lean a little more towards hangout, but there are a good bit of RPs and adventuring and whatnot. And a Genie would be completely welcome there.
didn't old-school mucks have a kind of scripting language
imagine the css crimes people could commit
Yes, but it was all pretty strictly text-based. I think newer MUCKs probably have fancy colors and/or fonts, but it's all still over telnet for the most part.
That being said, a MUCK with CSS crimes would be phenomenal.
I'm sure people could come up with other kinds of coding crimes
Shoving a room inside an object that someone can pick up and carry around for genie shenanigans, for instance
You joke, but Some Of Us would really like to go back to MUCKs, and might actually do so at some point. :)
This is perhaps the most HHOS thing I've ever said.
I miss the MUCKs desperately. I feel like even when I was using them heavily, I never truly got to experience them, for ... Reasons. I constantly want to go back.
The idea of a space where character driven action, presence, and environment could flourish - While providing an additionally out-of-character vibe when necessary - would be really nice.
I fear I just don't have the endurance anymore.
of the options I'm familiar with:
Tapestries: the insane old moderator came back sometime after you left, and the place is uninhabitable due to tyranny. everyone cool already left, just about
FurryMUCK: pretty quiet, easy to get into. MUF/MPI restrictions are a bit lighter than they were on Taps, unclear what kind of policies there are around building
Shangri-La: not really furry-oriented, but pretty populous. has an extensive on-grid lore/active social scene built around that lore, to the point where I can't just go to a fucking bar and cruise for suitable company. notably runs new enough software to support color.
PFMuck: their admins are actively open to the idea of a bunch of people joining. not sure what the building/scripting permissions are like.
Wolfery: browser-based. full of AI art. kind of a drag.
Hrm.
Okay. I might have to give this some serious thought.
I don't think it's actually a replacement for this space, of course, but it sounds ... Nice. To supplement. If it's possible.
I just don't know if I've got the chops and the willpower anymore. But it'd be nice to have an actual, honest to goodness environment rather than a nebulous void!!
even if it was just to be semi-regularly kissed on the cheek by various friends, I think it'd be nice.
but it is clearly a subject some of us have discussed before <3
It'd be nice. It'd be real nice.
It'd be nice to be seen as, you know, more than just a user name on a nebulous chat program. But maybe I'm just going a but stir-crazy. I know it's essentially the same as chats, but I still miss the MUCKs.
Also, aside: I thought PFMuck became 12Fold and then shut down? Huh. I never had the courage to go to either, regardless.
Are you thinking of Puzzlebox? I have never been to Puzzlebox, this is http://postfurry.net/muck .
If anyone would know whether you're worth playing with, it's me, and you are. <3
EDIT: actually visited the link. this used to be 12Fold, I guess! in any case the last time I carried on about this in public I got encouraged by the admins to bring people there n.n
Huh! I knew the address I had for 12Fold just up and stopped working, but I assumed the entire place shuttered. Good to know it's up and going.
And I will resist the urge to contest your point, and instead say thank you very much. <3
I remain profoundly sad about how Tapestries treated me. :/ They made good on things after they realized they'd donked up but it's still not home anymore. <3
Also, at this point, Shangrila MUX is my main stomping grounds.
I like it for a number of reasons; I enjoy being a stranger in a strange land, and while its staff are leaning VERY HEAVILY into something more gaslight-fantasy or steampunk-adjacent, I'm still thoroughly cyberpunk and while I get a few dirty looks from folks who're feeling stodgy about the theme (see: an interdimensional locus-of-worlds wherein the local deity figure pulls people in through a portal, converts them to Dreamstuff, and keeps them forever, immortal) folks generally just roll with it.
The grid roleplay is legitimately interesting and I've spent twenty years in the place on and off, kinda bouncing off or just getting a cool partner or two and then wandering away, back and forth. The idletimer is aggressive - if you've been gone for 60d when a quarterly wipe comes up, you get wiped, so save a log! - but if you're there and active it's wonderful. I got involved with the grid for the first time this last go-round and this is my only character bit that's lasted more than a year; going on four!
It was very welcoming to me in a tough time, and while Sam and I were having very tough feelings to sit alongside (it was COVID and my Owner just cancelled a trip to see us, so I felt very separated from my people and life, Sam from her old self), going to a place where you are expected to feel sundered-from in that way was healthy and useful to us.
I run the kitchens (which simultaneously exist only in my headcanon but are somehow renowned throughout the City and recognized for quality by the Prince himself) at the biggest brothel in town with a dronehive Sam and I bootstrapped out of tech we kitbashed by hand.
Come hang! We're in House Serpens, which is about keeping the City entertained. We flooded the arena at the Pleasure Dome and did naumachia one year!
I'm Marla there, too. http://www.shangrilamux.com
I left Taps long, long ago - but from what I gather it was somewhat fortuitous timing to depart.
And it sounds like Shangrila MUX is a great place, if you can mesh with the vibe! It seems considerably out of my depth, but gosh I really do just enjoy the fact that there are people out there making such a place thrive.
It's complicated if you want it to be but it's deeply unserious; there's an entire Heaven On Earth setup that's got -two Aeriths and two Tifas in it- right now, as well as someone I can only imagine is the -sister- of a Tifa, plus one lady named after an FF7 spell.
Down the street from them is a dude called Lyndon who -I know for a fact- murdered a kid in the basement at a party I attended while the rest of the guests were grooving upstairs. The next door down is Black Mountain and Inque and Wonder Woman are currently knocking boots in the Command Center; I've seen as many as eight capes in there at once. They have -wild- super-fucky parties, I bet.
There's no such thing as being out of your depth. Have the kind of fun you want to, join some groups, maybe the Portal throws a weird wrinkle on your wishmagic and it causes neat shit to happen. I dunno. If you have whatever fun occurs to you, other people will join you. That's all any of this has ever been about. <3
It's not cohost-centric, but if you want some in-character MUD action I can recommend https://farwoods.net/
(I'm posting it again because I can't remember if comments on rechosts get added to the comments for the original choster)
Oh! I'm completely unfamiliar with Farwoods, but that sounds really neat!! Thank you much for the tip on this. I really appreciate it.
Aw, fond memories.
I was a Furrymuck and Tapestries denizen, long long ago.
Same here, friend. I put years into FM, and then years into Taps afterward. Kind of fell entirely off both, though, a long while ago, myself.
Still, the concept feels like an awesome and welcome thing these days.
