It might be a little too late compared to when you asked for asks but what's the most formative childhood experience you've had regarding videogames? Just something that changed how you approach the artform and stayed with you. Or just some fun memory. I dunno.

Videogames! They're pretty good imho.

Before I go off on my probably super long post answering this, I wanna say that I really like this question and I would be interested to see others answer as well in replies and comments if you're so inclined!

So I have a few different potential answers for this ask, but I'm gonna start with one and maybe come back to this later!

Pokemon Crystal transed my gender

Okay obviously it's not that simple, but it's not that inaccurate either.

I bought Pokemon Crystal in 5th or 6th grade, not long after it came out, just long enough to be able to find a used copy from the game shop at the mall. I brought it home, slapped it in the back of my teal Gameboy Color (with "BRUSH YOUR TEETH" written below the screen in sharpie), erased the file on it and started a new one, only to be met, for the first time, with the Pokemon prof's now-ubiquitous question.

"Are you a BOY or a GIRL?"

This was the first time a game had given me the choice. In fact it was the first Pokemon game to give ANYONE that choice. In the prior releases, you simply played as a boy; Red in RBY, and Gold/Ethan in GS. Now I could CHOOSE if I wanted to be Gold or this new female character Kris.

And I liked Kris! I liked her a lot immediately. I thought her design was way more colorful and interesting, and what was more, I figured most of my friends were probably going to just pick the boy because they were boys, so picking the girl would be more interesting that way too.

And after that, if ever a game gave me the option to pick a female character, I did it in a heartbeat. "It's more interesting this way," I told myself. Games and stories like this are always about guys, playing as a girl makes things more novel, more fun, and I certainly like looking at girls more anyway, so of course I'd rather choose to have a girl on screen for the next 40 hours!

I did this for nearly two decades, with varying levels of self awareness, before I finally figured out what my deal was. I'd rather be a girl... I can be a girl! I'm going to be a girl! I am a girl!

Kris certainly didn't get me all the way there, but she started the ball rolling! And she's in my heart forever for that!
