Capitalism has rotted my mind

I want to draw something everyday of 2024

Started drawing on the table sets and didn't stop. Even though I remained calm, it feels wrong. I feel like I'm not thinking about my lines, drawing everything in a haste, I'm not aware of volumes, shapes, shadows, composition... It's just that I haven't been able to handle anything lately and drawing is one more place where my inability show up. I hate it.

Hey Windshyme, have you ever tried doing some focused studies?

Like "today i'll learn how to do eyes" or cars, cats, arms or other things. Picking up a subject, some references and trying to break it down into fundamental shapes like cilinders, boxes, pyramids and spheres might help a bit.

Also, it does take a long time until you can be aware of volumes/shapes/shadows (took me years!!), but time will pass nonetheless. You've shown a lot of good art on your profile and i'm sure you'll continue to do so.

I remember trying to do some hand studies at the beginning of the year but I ended up really frustrated at the time. I've given it another go yesterday and the resulting feeling was really different, even though I'm not entirely satisfied with how everything turned out I feel like I can improve and understand better now.
I knew learning how to draw would take time but I guess I'm still internalizing that fact. It's reassuring having experimented artists watching over me, it truly help so much...
Thank you for your advices, reassurances and compliments; it mean so much to me, I really needed it! :yeah:

Sometimes drawing is an escape, sometimes it's a mirror that just reflects all the stuff you're going through back at you through the paper. 🙃

You're not alone in this, but also... good job staying calm with it.

Composition is a complex subject on it's own, but for the other things... Volumes and shapes are a good starting place, they build a structure for the shadows, etc.

I'm not sure if you've been doing something like this recently, but it might be interesting to sketch a simple structure (circles, boxes) of something in pencil (without the details yet) and then draw with pen over it, drawing whatever you like but using that pencil sketch structure as a guide for your shapes.

Thank you; as always, the sympathy you show me warm my heart. :yeah:
Knowing others shares the same struggles as me -even highly skilled and experimented artists- is a source of hope, it remind me that my goals aren't out of reach. Thank you for your reassurance!

I never know when to stop with the sketch: it often become the final result or end up too undefined to help with the line work. I think the many fundamentals that goes into shaping it is part of what I struggle with right now. So I've been keeping your advices in mind while drawing theses past two days and even though I still struggle with a lot of things still, having theses sort of guidelines (regarding the sketch and which subjects to focus on for now) in mind felt comforting and helpful, thank you very much! 🤍
