Haha. Well hey, software peeps are struggling too. I think the small indies are just copying trends started by gen x game directors; older games. In some cases because those directors never struggled, but in others it was a warning of where we were heading. But now we're here!

They say: "Man, I loved fallout 3 as a youth"
They don't take that further and say: "Damn, we're almost there for real."

They say: "Yo, I love survival mechanics."
They don't take that further and say: "I should just make a cheery farming and fishing sim. Or maybe a camping game. Or even keep the 'capitalism bad and will lead to ruin' story I wanna tell, but have it be post-downfall and more uplifting."

Megaman Legends has a post-apocalyptic/drastic society-altering setting. People are just people though, being all happy, doing the arts, exploring the ruins of a time long past. The original Nier also shows that people will just move on an reform their own peaceful little communities.
But all these devs look at Fallout and go "nuclear war happened and society never rebuilt, even after 400 years" or whatever. "We'll always struggle and miss what used to be. We'll never remember how to farm ever again."

Dude, if society collapses, I get dibs on the local library. I already know which neighborhood by the river we should tear down for farming and which parking lots are going to be solar panel farms. We'll be fine. Just grab a chisel and help me make a modern post-collaspe take on Michelangelo's David, except it's Jotaro from jojos doing a funny pose. Future generations are going to worship this as a masterpiece and that's gonna be hilarious.
