Should I put shorts on a robot body?

I'm not 100% on the idea, and I have a lot of feelers out in a lot of places.

I've got a pretty long-running idea to anthropomorphize my little snake mascot by giving him a robot body to ride around on, and while I've only recently figured out that I can use his body to give him a cool scarf/jacket trim (and also a dad bod as is appropriate)

But after drawing him a couple of times with just the robot legs, I felt like they were a little bizarrely bare? I've always justified putting clothes on my robots by saying it's for dust/abrasion protection. So it makes sense that he would wear pants or something. But also I wanna' show off his little robot leggies, so that leaves shorts.

Do they gotta' be that short? Honestly kind of? I tried drawing him with longer shorts and he just looks like a double amputee that way.

anyway, I'm into hearing opinions.

I think the main things to think about with clothes on robots is what is being called attention to, both with and without clothes. The closer robots get to humanoid, the more designs with clothes will call attention to the fact that it's humanoid.

Which is to say, if you're gonna slap on shorts on the robot, lean in all the way have a pair that says "JUICY" in Blingee font across the back.

I'm a firm proponent of Character Designers Don't Have To Explain Shit so the robot can have clothes just because you feel like it and that's ok

Shorts are pretty good. The bot legs are too bare compared to the top half of the bot. I suppose an alternative would be some kind of fanny pack. Maybe even hit us with both?

I think having a fanny pack, or maybe even a messenger bag hanging real low, on the side can introduce some nice asymmetry too. The problem with asymmetry in a 2D design is sometimes you gotta horizontally flip the art, but with 3D? Just rotate!

Maybe even, if you wanna be silly, a dog treat pouch. My dog trainer friend just has a little cylindrical fanny pack that is just filled with dog treats so she can do that positive reinforcement wherever. That kinda shape might be cool to include.

What do you have in said bag/pack/pouch? That's between you and god.
