it's like a budget tamagotchi... you can pick three zones that each come with a unique friend. you need to feed them or play with them every 30 seconds to keep their happiness up, or it will go down by 1.
itty bitty creatures go back to sleep when you close the tab, but they remember where you left them when you come back.
also the favicon changes to match your selected creature...
