We earnestly and aggressively need to stop letting Christians monopolize conversations around the definition of marriage, you know that thing that cultures all over the world do?
"Marriage is a Christian ceremony." No. It's really not. There are cultures all over the world that practice it and there is a political and civil definition outside of that. You're just boring, insulated, and likely not invited to these things for a reason
Shocker for a culture defined by taking and forced assimilation, this isn't about you or your god. At least not in a way that matters. It's more about allowing biracial families raise their kids or allowing someone see their SO in the hospital.
The way that western christianity has monopolized the discussion around everything for the past thousand years has been so absolutely fucked. It's so normalized and sometimes you don't even notice it, until you do and then holy shit it's obnoxious and it's everywhere.
The concept of marriage is definitely a big one - and one we very much need to focus on right now - but there are others too that deserve their own talk time, later.
I think right now though it's deathly important that we don't let the christian idea of marriage be what drives legal definition of marriage. It violates so many other religious traditions and fundamental human behaviors to let this one style define everything.
