I think a lot of people don't understand just how scary the GDPR is, and therefore just how breathtakingly stupid what Elon Musk just did over at Twitter is.

You know the ADA, the law that made basically every business in America have wheelchair ramps and elevators?

The GDPR is an order of magnitude scarier than that.

That's the only way to have a shot of forcing these huge, billion dollar tech corporations into compliance with them. That's a good thing, by the way.

The fines are likely to be in the nine figures, easy. Might be more.

given this is Elon Musk i expect him to make a big pouty show of shutting off Twitter access to Europe rather than complying with the GDPR, which of course 1. is not something he will likely be able to do in any effective form with his remaining staff and 2. not going to save him from the shitstorm he's invited

i mean. we live in a deeply, deeply stupid world, so it's entirely possible there will be a lot of theater culminating in a big heap of nothing and Musk will simply be allowed to roll on, because god forbid rich people face consequences, but it's nice to imagine he's finally found a hole that his PR and bank account can't dig him out of

The thing is that the EU knows that if they let this GDPR thing slide they won't be able to enforce the less important parts of the GDPR ever again. They may not be able to go after Musk's money outside of Twitter but they will not back off Twitter, I don't think.
