6/10
Whew. I started watching Bleach 16 months ago, as something low-maintenance to watch that I had technically started but hadn't finished. (I was reading the manga as it was being released, but stopped at the same point as... most people I've spoken to about Bleach.)
There isn't that much I can say about Bleach that hasn't been said 1000 times before, except that I think it gets a worse reputation than it deserves. A 6/10 might not really say that - it really does derail horribly and some of the filler is horrendous - but it's easy to forget just how good Bleach was before it, uh, wasn't.
This would be a wild essay if I just wrote completely free-form, so I'll split things into arcs below the read more, with the usual caveat that there will be spoilers - I'll write each arc assuming people know the details of the previous ones, since it'll be a lot harder to avoid spoilers than usual, but even some of the arc names are spoilers.
As a whole, though, Bleach is really good at characters and really bad at resolving plots. The filler content, meanwhile, takes all the things people care about in Bleach and then wildly ignores them, making it even more obnoxious than just "meaningless episodes".
Arc names pulled from here, with some condensed a little where feels appropriate. Filler arcs are in italics.
Eps 1-20: Agent of the Shinigami / The Substitute:
Bleach starts on a fairly slow burn - the early episodes are essentially just character introductions, as we meet what is nominally the main cast (how much they actually stay as the main cast is up for debate). It's still solid content, for all that 20 episodes of essentially setup feels like a lifetime now, and the character is handled well as ever. By about episode 14, it should be pretty clear if Bleach is something you'll like... and if it had stayed that way, it would've been great.Eps 21-63: Soul Society arcs:
This continues fairly slowly - and, in hindsight, for no reason beyond misdirection, as the characters introduced here are just for this section, but it's no fun if you know in advance who's going to be relevant and who isn't. It picks up pretty solidly once the Soul Society is established, though; once the rules and characters are known, it moves at a pretty rapid pace, and the setup it spins is still really good to this day. I think you'd be pretty hard-pressed to find an anime fan who doesn't know Bleach's primary antagonist, but the reveal here is still executed wonderfully.Eps 64-109: The Bount arcs:
Oh jeez, filler time. Since I'd only read the manga (to a point) before this, this was all new content for me, and it immediately flung in new characters who... weren't bad, honestly. For having not been in the original story, the new Mod Souls introduced here aren't terrible. Their entry is solid, setting them up as antagonists before spinning it into essentially a playful test. Their powers are far too strong in places, in the way that inevitably raises questions when they'd be useful later, but that's not a massive criticism honestly. The Bounts themselves are mostly fairly forgettable, and there are elements to the plot here that just make zero sense - the Bitto in particular are both absolutely unnecessary and make zero world-building sense in something that's not meant to directly impact the main story. This is also the first arc to introduce a solution to the main story's removal of someone's powers, only to have to immediately find a way to make it not work again. sigh.
Honestly, though, this is the filler that best plays to Bleach's strengths. There isn't as much to work with as later arcs, and yet they managed to find ways to introduce new characters, keep the main cast all relevant to both the plot and the combat, and just put enough action in that they didn't write themselves into too many corners. Only, like, 3 or 4.
Eps 110-167: Arrancar arcs:
I know a lot of people were really big fans of a lot of Espada. Or, at least, they were at the time of release, I have no idea how things have changed since. Either way, I've never really got it. I think they have some of the worst characterization in all of Bleach: Ulquiorra is the typical dark brooding type, Grimmjow is yet another "might makes right" character (which.. at least makes sense for a shonen to have a lot of those, I guess, but they're still kinda boring), and most of the others introduced at this point aren't highly praised. (I do think the story behind Aaroniero is good, and Szayelaporro would be a lot better if they didn't both have another character in the same role and then have them battle each other to draw attention to it.)The battles themselves are mostly good here. There's a lot of innovation in how the fights play out, and it serves to slowly introduce new tools to everyone's arsenals as well as the abilities of some of the newer characters. The newer characters, though, are irritating as all hell - I already mentioned most of the Espada being boring, but I'll take boring over whatever the hell Nel and her companions are.
Anyways, things really start to pick up towards the end - the scenes surrounding Ulquiorra and Grimmjow move the plot in a far more interesting direction, and do a fantastic job of really engaging people in the story... just in time for more filler. :')
Eps 168-189: New Captain arc:
On the whole, this filler is really good at doing two things: being entirely self-contained (in that it doesn't impact the main story) and creating good motives for everyone's actions. Aaand that's about it. Oh well. The characters are mostly awful - Rurichiyo herself isn't awful, although she's definitely not the kind of character everyone will like (or even tolerate), but her two retainers & the new captain and lieutenant are all painfully bland, to the point that it's a constant reminder that this is irrelevant filler content. I'd give credit here for allowing some of the Shinigami with less focus a chance to be in the spotlight, but the characterisation in the filler tends to be pretty awful, whether that's being jarringly out-of-character at times (Hisagi) or just making them really dull (in this arc, Kira).
Beyond that, though, having the two stories run parallel to each other and intertwine towards the end is good, and the existence of the Bakkoto becoming a potential problem to the main story writes itself, as resolving the conflict also (arguably) prevents them from being relevant later. It's just a shame that both the characters and the action - in a shonen that typically excels at character - are pretty terrible.
Eps 190-227: Arrancar Battle arcs:
This is a slightly chaotic set of arcs, with a few flashbacks pulling things around (and some frustratingly-placed filler derailing it further, but we'll get to that later). For the most part, those flashbacks are pretty good - the Soul Society past with the Visoreds is fantastic and provides some good background to characters who desperately needed it by this point, while Nel's is... a little less good, but also way shorter. The fights are typically fine, although nothing special - even basically tripling the size of the relevant cast adds fairly little here, as fights go from an interesting underdog situation to a raw display of power, intellect, etc. It feels a little deus ex machina in some places, mostly in Hueco Mundo, but picks up pace a little in Karakura Town.
This is the filler pacing at its most egregious - the Rurichiyo stuff hit at just the point where the Arrancar plot was start to pick up speed, and this cuts at exactly the worst possible point. It's mid-fight, with unresolved plotlines everywhere, and almost unashamedly cuts away with "this is another story that happened in a different time and place". It's terrible, and I get why people complained about Bleach filler so much despite other shows being worse on the amount of filler they had.
Eps 230-265: Zanpakuto Unknown Tales arc:
So much of the plot here is infuriating. There are elements that just make absolutely no sense - why does Ichigo's Zangetsu manifest with the form that Ichigo knows, but most of the Shinigami don't recognise their Zanpakuto? Why is everyone okay with Byakuya pretending to betray everyone when that involves actually betraying everyone and not telling anyone anything? - and the story only moves from bad to worse. The Muramasa plot is terrible, both in terms of his motives and methods, but the follow-up with the remaining loose Zanpakuto is mostly just terrible. Those post-arc episodes really highlight the biggest problem with Bleach's filler all over again - so much of it is centred around characters who not only aren't interesting, but also have zero bearing on anything. In this case, it's the Zanpakuto spirits, where it's difficult to care about Haineko's love interests (as an example) when not only is it fairly nonsensical in terms of the setting, but also known to be pretty irrelevant beyond that because it's entirely filler. One of Bleach's strength is in the writing of characters, and it'd be easy to write those characters into new scenarios, but the filler eventually eschews that entirely to just write in new characters who aren't anywhere close to as likeable or interesting. Combined with the pacing and some questionable main story choices - we'll come to that soon - it makes it more than clear why Bleach really fell from grace.
Eps 266-310: Arrancar Finale arc:
This was the part where I stopped reading the manga after what was a fairly steady decline. For those who don't know the story behind Bleach's manga decline, there are so many hilarious - in hindsight, and horrendous at the time - factors to talk about. The most memorable is Kubo Tite firing all of his art staff because they were supposedly stealing money from his hard work. Cue massive waves of the Fake Karakura Town fights having no backgrounds because the staff he needed to draw them weren't there any more, until he had no choice but to admit his mistake and hire artists again. There's also a chapter in the manga that frustrated me with the obvious bait, and the anime handles it similarly poorly. Hitsugaya - a character who I never quite understood the popularity of, but who was unbelievably popular during the manga's run - ends a chapter in the manga, an episode in the anime, being torn down by Halibel. The next opens with Hitsugaya trying (and failing) to sneak attack her, with his supposed death being an illusion created by utilising the ice from his Zanpakuto. The part that frustrated me is that they emphasise that this would never work twice, and the sneak attack fails spectacularly, making this feel like the cheapest way to get a reaction. The Espada fights in Fake Karakura, for what it's worth, are really good. The Visoreds appearance changes the fights drastically, but not to the point that they feel trivial (as the captains' appearances in Hueco Mundo did), and some of the methods used to defeat the Espada feel creative in the good way, like they're a character finding a way to one-up their opponent and not a writer finding a way out of a hole (again, like in Hueco Mundo). That follows through into the grand finale, which is the point that made me stop reading the manga to begin with. I was almost braced for impact watching it - I knew I disliked it the first time, so I went in expecting the worst - but I wasn't prepared for just how much the relentless filler around it made it feel even worse.
Eps 317-342: Gotei 13 Invading Army arc:
One of my friends in my stream server mocks this filler arc relentlessly as "Zanpakuto Arc Take 2" and, honestly, that's not far off. He also criticises it for making no sense within the given world - Reigai don't serve a useful purpose within Soul Society - but I think that's a little more forgivable since it's mostly stepped aside with "it's for research purposes".More than anything, this arc highlights all the weaknesses of Bleach filler - Kon being central to everything is infuriating when he's such a drastic departure from the majority of Bleach's character styles (and just an irritating character in general), the new characters feel bland and emotionless, the story is reused from previous filler, and even the previous filler felt kind of cheap there in that it used existing abilities to seemingly avoid having to develop anything new and creative. The conclusion to the arc is pretty unsatisfying too, not in the sense of an ending that feels bad, but more that it feels like they had no idea how to end things and just took a shortcut out. This was an absolute slog to get through, and I'd honestly not recommend anyone put up with watching this unless you're as determined to fully complete things as I am.
Eps 343-366: Lost Substitute Shinigami arc:
The Fullbringer content was the first - and only - non-filler arc that was entirely new to me watching this, so my experience here was very different to everything prior. The characters are back to their full strength, with heavy clichés portrayed well; Tsukishima and Yukio's abilities in particular are both really innovative, despite stemming from fairly generic starting points. The one big disappointment here is Giriko, who has the ability to make contracts with a god of time, being granted phenomenal powers as long as he abides by the rules of the contract. This is then used to... create explosions and gain strength. That's about it. Riruka, on the other hand, is still a very clichéd character but with hints of character development scattered throughout and a wide-reaching ability that seems simple at first glance but constantly reveals new elements, and is probably the highlight of this arc for me.There are probably people who would get frustrated with Bleach's cycle of growth at this point - new power appears, Ichigo trains to get the new power, ends up becoming more powerful than every single person who's been using that power for years - but honestly, I can't even be mad about it. Bleach leans so hard into Ichigo being phenomenally overpowered, mostly in that he can seemingly pick up any ability in a fraction of the time of anyone else, that it's honestly a part of the fun. It's silly, but that feels like it's kind of the point.
Of course, by this point, they knew the initial anime run was coming to an end, so the conclusion is unsatisfying. We'll see how I get on with Thousand-Year Blood War soon, I'll probably start on that soon, but I'm honestly glad it got picked up again. For all that Bleach has some fundamental flaws - and really suffered from mid-2000s shonen pacing - it does so much well that it would be a shame for it to have fallen from grace so far without any redemption.
Eps 33, 50, 128-137, 147-149, 204-205, 213-214, 228-229, 287, 298-299, 303-305, 311-316, 355: Other filler episodes:
Whoops, more filler! This is mostly short stories, one-off episodes and such. The Karakura Superhero stuff is pretty terrible comedy filler that forgets the comedy part, while most of the filler stories are inoffensive but not good - they're just sort of there without really interfering with the main story around them in any way. Two are just advertising for the 4th movie, which is somehow not as bad as most of the others here. Most of the one-off episodes (even if often grouped together) are just obnoxious comic relief stuff. A ton of these focus on Kon, which I've already talked about being a problem, but there are so many that focus on the lieutenants as well, and those are frustrating for a whole other reason. Most reduce the lieutenants to really bland and basic characters - Matsumoto becomes entirely about fashion, Ikkaku is just loud and angry, Yumichika is lazy and egotistical, Hisagi is horny for some reason??? It's frustrating seeing good (or at least decent) characters reduced to almost nothing.
There are a few that pick up on earlier filler characters - the Mod Souls from the Bount Arc or Rurichiyo from the New Captain arc - but these are all comic relief nonsense more than any typically shonen content. A couple in particular are just baffling, with the main cast being put into other fantasy settings; I'm not really sure why they thought a filler episode of mythical demons or Aladdin was a good idea, but they're some of the worst episodes in the whole show.
And that's it! 366 episodes of Bleach in.. about 16 months? This post took me like 6 hours to write, so I'm just gonna stop here and see how I feel about TYBW when I get to that soon, although I'm bad at watching seasonals so maybe I'll take a short Bleach break first. Whew.
