Gods. It's been a while since I watched something bad without knowing it was bad going in. Venus Versus Virus is about a world filled with monsters called viruses that only a handful of people can see. Sumire, the main character, is one of these unfortunate people who is targeted because she can see them, and ends up meeting Lucia, who is fighting them.

And then not much else happens, if I'm entirely honest, but I'll try my best to talk about it.

Spoilers below~

Okay, "not much else happens" is a little harsh. There's a lot of what feels like filler of Lucia and friends training Sumire to fight against the viruses while doing their best to understand her own natural 'berserk' abilities, and occasionally they'll get pulled away to fight the viruses and test Sumire's abilities (which inevitably always ends with her failing, going berserk, and then needing to be subdued afterwards).

The later part of the series focuses more around Sumire's love interest, as well as Lucia's backstory, and it's a step up from where things start. (For context, it took actual weeks for me to push myself to watch more of this past the first couple of episodes, before blitzing the last few like I usually do.) The thing is, it still isn't good. It's just better at giving some actual motivations and not just fighting a new monster of the week. Lucif's backstory is told horribly, and it's not a particularly good one to begin with, and it's never exactly clear how or why Sumire ended up involved in that - maybe that's something the manga deals with, but that just makes it all the more frustrating that the anime spends the first half going in circles.

There's not much else to say here in all honesty. I watched this show for the music and it's easily the best part of it, and some of the character designs are good, but otherwise, it's bland as they come.
