I drew my profile pic and banner. The gameplay in the banner is from dragon quest 1 for game boy that I recorded myself.

hmmmm a bit concerning never had this happen before but luckily it was okay because it was actually an official download from something I wanted it:

google just served me a direct download link (to discord) and downloaded a file to my computer with no prompting

what I expected: going to a downloads page

I've never in my entire time using google have ever clicked on a link expecting a direct file download and never have been served one until now.

what the fuck like am I being crazy or is this really bizarre ???

in reply to @YuushaRuby's post:

i feel like this is very uncommon. I think my only memory of it is back before browsers had built in PDF readers, where you'd click a PDF on Google and it'd download.

like, technically, the main reason this doesn't happen in that Google needs to read a page to understand what it's about and surface it, and a downloadable file isn't a page, right?

i wonder if Discord is serving the Google scraper bot a different thing, giving it an actual HTML page, while everyone else gets a direct download.

or alternatively, could Google have indexed just the link from a downloads page, understood it as a relevant file, and surfaced it? idk this feels less likely than Discord customizing the response based on who asks.
