what why

I assume that at this rate, sometime this decade a vendor will start selling switches that each have a little speaker in them to make them sound different

other ideas:

  • haptic feedback instead of mechanical feedback
  • electro magnetic "springs" so you can adjust how heavy switches are on the fly
  • tiny little bell at the bottom so it rings when you bottom out
  • mineral oil submerged keyboard

    these can be considered separately or combined

  • keys made out of slimy organic matter
  • every key makes an air horn sound
  • some keys zap you when you press them like that zapping gum from school days
  • every key is a tiny black and white display that you can display anything on
  • button that makes all the key caps fly off

Solenoids were an historic feature on some vintage keyboards I think to give them a more typewriter-like feel in use? There are a handful of modern implementations as well, like the MechWild Clunker, although I don't think there are any that use really powerful solenoids for power draw reasons, since modern keyboards usually are either running on USB power or very small batteries.

(I would love to have an ergo layout keyboard with a solid alu acase, running off of a bunch of 18650s or something for power, and a big honking solenoid going CLANG CLANG)

And dial-a-weight would also be an excellent feature. The closest thing we have currently is variable actuation point on keyboards with full analog switches (e.g., Wooting and some Razer models), which is also a very cool feature, although mechanical keyboard nerds never want to talk about those switches for some reason.

i actually have the variable actuation point razer gamepad! It's actually super cool because you can do analog inputs with depth so it was a blessing for racing games. unfortunately the ergo was shit (despite being ortho) and the thumbstick was actually just a dpad in disguise. also only one button available to the thumb (other than the stick) and some clear layout decisions that made you question who made it and why.

also iirc it was "all analog or all keys" so it wasnt as good for space sims as i had hoped.
