I drew my profile pic and banner. The gameplay in the banner is from dragon quest 1 for game boy that I recorded myself.

what’s the software people are forced to interact with that doesn’t know how to handle .webp

webp is a perfectly reasonable image format (honestly very good for webpages) very badly hurt by software not implementing it. but also I literally don’t know what software everyone is using that makes them suffer and has made “webp bad” the common knowledge? basically all of the software I use can happily work with them as far as I can tell??

Photoshop didn’t have built in webp support until November 2022

literally just normal ass preview on my laptop is the main one - i can't see what the image is unless i want to boot up a whole editing software suite
plus imessage gets weird if i try to text a webp image

yeah it's definitely less the format itself (it's potentially very cool that there's a small and more web-friendly format) but the fact that it's barely backwards compatible that makes it a no-go for me

Tried it a few places. From the applications I use regularly, here's where webp worked: Firefox, PaintDotNet, MS Paint (Legacy), Aseprite, Discord, iOS Photos, Microsoft Word

And where webp didn't work: MS Paint 3D (Windows 10), Windows 10 photo viewer, Clip Studio Paint

fun detail: turns out I can add webp images to an OBS scene. but only single images, not a slideshow, which is the thing that I actually ran into

and I could file a bug on that, but there are things where you can't file a bug, like macOS. if I reached Apple support and asked for .webp support in the OS, they'll say "our latest OS already supports webp!" and I'd say "great, how do I install your latest OS" and they'd say "pay us $1800 for a new computer!"

and it is just not possible for me to like an image format that much

Yeah so that’s why lol, I also hated webp until I realized it’s just Adobe is stupid, I didn’t realize they actually implemented it finally until I saw your post cus my answer was like “oh, photoshop” at first but wanted to double check, now that I know I think I might shift my website’s images to webp
