does anyone have recommendations for horror games that aren't just like jumpscare simulator, I like fucking narrative and mystery and shit man I like the magnus archives and twilight zone and like Jordan Peele films and like... courage the cowardly dog... a game I found on my own that actually rules is Laplace No Ma for super famicom, it's cool as shit to me

edit: I like death stranding even though it does do jumpscares, but it's mostly vibes

I think of CONTROL as action horror, there's moments in it that are really terrifying and visually it's rich in horror imagery. There's also a great little gothic horror game called MAID OF SKER that has a minimal amount of jump scares, no more than a typical horror movie. Also if you dig Super Famicom horror titles, CLOCK TOWER: THE FIRST FEAR is incredible, it's a truly beautiful horror game dripping with atmosphere.

i played Subway Midnight recently and enjoyed it a lot. it does have a couple of jumpscares, but it’s mostly weird, creative VFX and atmosphere. gameplay-wise it’s essentially a walking sim. it’s on Steam and maybe also Itch.

a kind of obscure horror-ish (but really only ‘ish’) rpg-ish game that i really love is Fragile ~さようなら月の廃墟~ (for the Wii). i think you mentioned studying Japanese elsewhere, and i’d recommend playing it in Japanese if possible (no idea if there’s a ROM, though, and the Wii is region-locked, and also you’d need a Wii).

Siren: Blood Curse is a great game which iirc doesn’t really use jumpscares (been a long time though). it’s the most classically horror-like out of all of these (zombies and weird rituals). the overall atmosphere is very well-done and creepy. this one is on PS3; not sure if it was ever released for PC.

totally second the person recommending Kitty Horrorshow.

(also i’m recommending lesser-known things here on the assumption that recs like Silent Hill would be too obvious, but if you haven’t played, like, Silent Hill 2 or the Fatal Frame series, i think those would fit the bill for mystery, plot, vibes, etc.)

Thanks for the thoughtful response I’ll definitely have to check these out! Also yeah I actually haven’t played any of the silent hill games ever hahaha, and I’ve never heard of fatal frame! Also yeah I’m learning Japanese I’ve been studying it for about 2/3rds of a year now I’m still very newbie with it but I study every day, and I do actually plan on getting a Japan region Wii before too long so I’ll have to see if I can track that game down when I can afford to!

oh then I definitely recommend trying them out! SH2 was originally on PS2, but i think it’s available digitally these days? SH3 is also supposed to be very good, but i haven’t played it.

out of the Fatal Frame games i’ve played, Fatal Frame 1 and 2 were released on PS2; unsure about other platforms. Mask of the Lunar Eclipse was on Wii but is being rereleased for Switch this year!

Maiden of Black Water, which i haven’t played, is also supposed to be good and was rereleased for (i think) Switch and desktop, among other platforms.
