Robotic, but in a pleasant way.

I talk about video games, scifi, old anime, and robots.
Asks and comments welcome!

Poor discoverability feels like the sites biggest weakness atm, to the point where I think addressing it would go a long way with helping the others problems. I've spoke with folks who've actively decided against using cohost because of the low discoverability, and while the plural of anecdote isn't data and all that, its not hard to imagine that folks choosing to stay off the site would further discourage others. The less users join, the more that limits the potential diversity of interests and the lower the ceiling is on possible engagement.

The porn thing, as obnoxious as it is, feels like it could be easily solved with just an UI change. A little toggle in the corner with No 18+ / All Posts / Only 18+ options would be super welcome.

I’m really enjoying the vibe here, it’s very comfy and casual, but the porn thing definitely keeps me from using the site in public settings. I’ll toggle the 18+ posts off if I know I’ll be out and about, but I already almost gave someone’s granny a heart attack at the grocery store when some untagged hyperdong zipped past my feed while she was behind me in line

I don’t want to just demand people’s posts cater to my needs, but I’d really, really appreciate folks being better about tagging the outright porn

Tagging essentially works on an honor system and can never be perfect, but then neither can moderation. I think the filtering system and end users could both be doing a better job, but part of the problem as I see it are the site's demographics. If a site sets up in the wake of porn crackdowns on other social media sites and differentiates itself (at least partially) by welcoming porn, it's going to attract a lot of people who have a vested interest in posting porn. Twitter expat lookie-loos might bounce, but people who want old Tumblr back have stayed, and that means a relatively high percentage of users who are posting porn. The website's functionality could be improved, but the website's culture isn't going to change unless the userbase does.

Not gonna post this as a reblog, but.

"Staff's uncomfortable waffling on banning underage art and the resulting comments section full of people with whom I do not want to share a website"

Not sure if this would count as a "reply guy" reply (I hope not) as I have been lucky enough to not stumble upon such content here yet, but I hope this place's blocking system has a way to block all of a specific user's accounts.

I mean, if they're going to post that stuff with one account, I would very much prefer to not have to interact with them in any way, accidentally or not. Does that make sense?

(Likewise, I'm aware there's a few people on this site who very likely still hate my guts, or just plain don't like me for whatever reason, and I'd be fine with them making sure our paths would never cross, even accidentally.)

Nor had I found anything like that prior to the ban, but some of the discussion in the comment thread on that staff update is just as sickening. I think blocks are per page rather than per account, which seems like a bit of an oversight if so. Either way, no one is allowed to post underage art anymore, and that comment thread doubles as a handy blacklist for some of the biggest creeps on cohost.
