Someone in Sunrise must have been a fan of the 1953 scifi film, Invaders from Mars, in which alien invaders mind control humans through a mechanical device in the back of their heads.
Combattler V takes this conceit directly, with the addition that the device can be set to explode. The later Zambot 3 keeps the explosion but ditches the mind control aspect.
