Did you know that the Fruit Machine - the “homosexual detector” mentioned in the 1962 portion of this chapter - was a real thing? TVO, Ontario’s public broadcaster, did an amazing/horrifying documentary on it a few years back. (Geoblocked, apologies if necessitating a VPN. 💦) I also drew on “The Canadian War on Queers: National Security as Sexual Regulation”, which goes over the Gay Purges in government and the military in great detail, and I recommend it, but it’s obviously not a light read.
