I don't know how to finish the rendering and draw the scales

I asked a friend for a paint-over and she gave me this along with some written suggestions. I'll try to apply them next time I mess around with this pic

The lighting in this is great! Rendering advice is a little above my pay grade, though.
Looks amazing! They're both good for different reasons. I might even slightly prefer the original because it preserves a little more of the white local color.

That's one of the things I'm trying to change on my drawing as well! Keeping a bit of the original white scales
