So, of course, I'm going to christen my cohost rambling about my Amejo ship. So, tl; Dr the Yule series is a slice-of-life, urban fantasy series exploring the tragedies and victories of everyday magicians. Characters are simply trying to make sense of who they are as they traverse through the world of magic >:3
Jonas Vogel - Jonas is the illegitimate child of Savannah and Frank Vogel. He was raised begrudgingly by his uncle (Savannah's husband), Abraham Vogel. For obvious reasons, Jonas falls into a life of delinquency before being recruited by Yule Academy to study the spatial arts. Despite his terrible upbringing, he is a pleased pup.
Truthfully, he is so desperate to be adored and loved by anyone that he would go to great lengths to please them. For example, after graduating from Yule, he would steal forbidden scrolls for his biological father in hopes of being graced by his admiration. As a result, Jonas is easily manipulated despite his good heart. This will have dire consequences for Jonas's reputation and relationship with everyone; thus, it will push him to a breaking point.
Ames Beaufort - Ames is the adopted child of Arthur Yule, the archmage of Britain (basically the most powerful mage in the region). Not only Arthur oversees governmental policies, but he also runs the academy. Ames was a French aristocrat raised by his fashion designer mother and business mogul father. However, he would be taken into the magic commission custody after he lost control of his magic at school and accidentally killed students.
Due to the nature of his crimes and being barely over his teenage, Ames's identity was hidden away, and the public never disclosed his real name. Moreover, he would subsequently be adopted by Arthur Yule and be mentored to be Arthur's arch-apprentice possibly.
Truthfully, Ames feels invisible to his peers and family. He knows they love him, but he wonders if people are only interested in him because they want something. He has difficulty trusting his peers and gaining notoriety for being stuck up, cruel, and bitter to anyone who tries to greet him.
To make matters worse, Ames had recently learned that he was being overloaded by magic. If he cannot handle this, his body will be consumed by energy, and he'll perish. The Yules are desperate to find a way to cure Ames, but Ames is secretly happy that he may lose his magic forever.
How did they meet!!?
Ames was a second-year academy student when he became acquainted with Jonas. Jonas, who was in a middle of a crime, was recruited by Roy Yule to attend the academy as a first-year (much to Arthur's dismay). However, Roy Yule was one of the only remaining magicians who practiced spatial magic in Europe. Desperate to revitalize the magic type, he quickly snatches Jonas, who was naturally competent at the specialty.
Initially, Ames had no regard for Jonas and, like his father, did not respect local goons like the magician. But when Arthur forbade Ames from smoking (in hopes of improving his health), Ames found himself making deals with Jonas to get weekly packs.
What was once a transactional relationship soon became a close bond as the two realized they had much more in common than they thought. Ames couldn't help but find Jonas's loyalty endearing and always wanted his attention. Meanwhile, Jonas truthfully thought Ames was adorable. Behind Arthur's back, the two start a secret sordid relationship.
The little things-
By the end of their educational career, Jonas was primed to become Roy's replacement at the academy while Roy traveled the world to find students for the academy. The man seemed pretty happy about the arrangement and joked that he never had to worry about housing and money again.
Meanwhile, Ames was fast-tracked to become a detective under Archmage Niki Morningstar's supervision. Niki is Arthur's best friend and was thrilled to employ her godson. Honestly, Ames did not want to pursue this, but he had difficulty saying no to the man who took him out of the system and thus felt obligated to pursue Arthur's dreams and not his.
Jonas was dismayed by this. He was aware of Ames's passion for opening a cafe and urged him to pursue his dreams. The pair would fight a lot about Ames's future and health, which finally took its toll on their relationship. When Ames graduated from the academy, they finally broke up...
Upon Ames's request, he asked the Yules never to update him on Jonas's well-being. The whole situation was very much raw for him. Meanwhile, Ames's resentment for his father spilled over as Ames intentionally grew distant from his beloved father. Had Arthur not pushed him so hard, would life be easier for him? At the same time, the only person who could blame for the downfall of Amejo was himself.
It would be years later when Ames and Jonas reunite. However, the circumstances would be a far cry from what bright future they envisioned together, as Ames discovered Jonas fell back into delinquency. He was connected to a series of murders across Europe...
