Hello I usually go by Zardoz on the net.
I used to draw a lot. I might even draw again someday.

jet set radio 3 looking real good

This is less of a review, more of "I just finished the game and would like to make my thoughts everybody's problem." Starting with the non-spoilery stuff:

  • The game controls fine1 and coming from playing JSRF a week ago, the physics are pretty close to that. Your character is a bit less floaty than in JSRF—confusing at first, but not bad.
    • Similarly confusing at first but not bad: Graffiti mechanics. The trailers made me worry I'd hate it, but it's nice having multiple art pieces always available! Just wish I could better memorize what each pattern was...
  • The music! The art!! The character design!!! :eggbug-smile-hearts:
  • I was worried the BMX and Skateboard would be annoying or awkward, but they're not too bad! I still only played with inline skates :eggbug-tuesday:
Spoilers, click to reveal My biggest issue was the DJ Cyber fight—I had no idea how to fight him until looking it up. Even a vague hint would help, since the mechanic wasn't introduced until that point!

In general, the boss fights were a bit annoying and not really satisfying to play through. You just kinda hit at them until it's over. You can spray paint the cops, but I have no idea if that does anything useful? It all just feels like "hit them until something happens."

The final boss was fun though! It (and the earlier mech battle) felt like an evolution on the turrets, which was neat.

And I loved the crew battles. But I love trying to rack up combos, so of course that appeals to me.

All said, I feel the game holds up on its own, even though it takes a heavy dose of inspiration from the JSR series. And imo it holds up as a very good game!

(spoilers?) something something more than its roots

  1. I'm using a Steam controller with the default config (Gamepad with Camera Controls). The camera is a bit wonky with that config, but wasn't enough of a dealbreaker that I had to mess with it. Otherwise, I don't imagine the specific controller matters, but y'know... trackpads.
