daltonize.effect

I've been going through the vs. puzzle game gauntlet the past couple years.
And... these types of games often involve color matching and chaining.

Over at Puzzle Wednesday there are a few colorblind folks. People have been making colorblind rom hacks for certain games, like Super Puzzle Fighter II, Landmaker and so on. Color hacks by Rodrick, Trashboat and others have been a massive help!

But I wanted something more consistent so I don't always get caught on the backfoot.

Some setup:

  1. Install obs-shaderfilter. On Linux you might have to build it with obs from source. At least I had to.
  2. Place daltonize.effect somewhere. Or /examples/, where the rest of the shaders are.
  3. Make a window/desktop/source in obs and enter filters. Make a user-defined shader. Tick use effect file and load shader from file. Select daltonize.effect.
  4. Disable daltonize and enable simulate. At the very bottom there is a list of parameters for 3 main colorblindness types. You can manually set params for the one closest to your perception. I set mine for protanopia even though reds don't look remotely green to me.
  5. Enable daltonize. It should look very different, but the colors should now be very distinct.
  6. Play with the parameters of the dalton matrix to your own taste. I made mine look
closer to "real" colors but shifted a bit.

You can use OBS to project your scene either fullscreen or in a new window.

I can distinguish matching colors in many puzzle games clearly now:

Puyo Puyo Tsu
Puzzle Bobble 1-4
Soldam (Singleplayer)
Panel de Pon / Panel Attack
Mouse Shooter GoGo

Some others have needed tweaking.
