I finished it last night and I pretty much agree with all of this. There's a lot of cool stuff in the DLC but it doesn't really cohere into a single whole, which is what I actually wanted; even the Messmer stuff felt kind of underwhelming to me in the end. Which sucks, because he's probably meant to be The One in this DLC. As it stands I don't know if Shadow of the Erdtree even has something that hits the same as Artorias or Ludwig. The closest for me personally was the Manus Metyr questline but even that feels so tangential to the main plot. And it's totally disconnected from the Frenzied Flame stuff! Why!! Come on!!!
As you say, final boss sucks on pretty much every level. The only part I liked was reading the description on the remembrance armor, going back to watch old trailers, and thinking "oh yeah, that kinda is in there".
Commander Gaius can eat shit and die. Even more annoying than the final boss IMO.
Yeah I don't know if anything in this DLC cracks the top echelon of bosses for me either. I'd put my absolute favourites down as Maria, Gehrman and Artorias, with Ludwig right on the cusp. It is a remarkable testament to that DLC that to this day the Artorias boss fight is something they've only ever equaled, but never topped.
Gaius sucks so bad. Its like they just didn't test the hitbox of his charge attack at all; it feels broken.
