If you're applying for a job and get rejected, always, ALWAYS reply and ask why you were rejected. ALWAYS.
Especially if they're nice enough to notify you of the rejection instead of ghosting you.*
Getting rejected hurts and your first impulse will be to close the window and go to sleep, but even after your little break, work up the energy to reply back and ask why, if you can. You won't always get an answer back. In fact, chances are good you won't get an answer at all, as hiring is highly automated in certain fields.
But sometimes you'll get an answer back, and you'll know what happened. They might be lying, but you'll gain insight into what they're looking for. This is particularly true if you get filtered at the screening stage. At screening most recruiters aren't even really looking at detailed qualifications, they're checking if you can spell your name right or if you even exist, so there might've been some oversight you or they can correct.
The latter was my case, and if you ask there's a chance they'll read your reply, realize they fucked up, and reactivate your application, like they did mine.
Always ask.
*If they're ghosting you, that's sort of different territory as rather than replying it's more like following up. Still doesn't hurt to do, but it can be as grueling as cold-calling, so, that's a stress all its own.
