I mean, my picture of freemasonery is basically the Simpson episode. It's a gentleman's club with a dash of occultism thrown into it. Fucking Tony Blair is a member.
On a more serious note, I once read the wikipedia article on the Prince Hall lodge because I was reading about a Jazz musician (Sun Ra). I do want to do more readings about them though, and about the Illuminatie (who were not freemason, but Adam Weishaupt did try to get the approval of the organisation before deciding to create his little club on his own if I remember correctly), because it is genuinely a topic that interest me.
I do wonder if you could map out to a spectrum from "less focused on the occult" to "more focused on the occult", I think you would have the Freemason and the Hellfire club on one end, and something like The Hermetic Society of the Golden Dawn on the other.
I feel like you need a second axis besides the occult one, because P2 wasn't that into the occult as far as I'm aware but it was more political organization than social club. Granted, it was no longer registered with the Masonic authority in Italy at its peak but I don't think you can count it out of the history
