i feel similarly! after 2 and a half playthroughs of this game, i find myself loving the mechanics and being consistently underwhelmed by the story. there's about 2 points that i think are really strong writing wise, mostly in chapter 5, but apart from that it doesn't really work for me so much. interested to see your continuing thoughts!
Just out of curiosity which FE is your favourite for storytelling? Mine's probably 3H (I've played like half of binding and all of stones, awakening, and 3H)
i'm technically still one chapter out from the ending, but i really like path of radiance! i think especially the character writing in that game is super strong at makes you care about all these people at least a little. some of the support conversations actually made me tear up! (tho that may have been influenced by how i was voicing them.) i was also like actually legitimately intrigued by the larger plot, which hey, doesnt happen every day.
i also think thracia 776 is astonishingly solid at its larger plot writing for a snes fire emblem, even though like half the characters are cardboard cutouts at best
everybody says that PoR is great! Really need to get around to that one
