Something interesting that's come up in a couple recent commissions is that I tend to draw characters with three fingers and a thumb. A couple of clients recently have asked me to change WIPs so that their characters have four fingers and a thumb because that's the proper number of fingers for their character.
Which is all good! It's a minor change I can easily do to make a client happy. I never mind when folks ask me to change. For me, the number of fingers is less a matter of anatomy or design, and more a matter of my art style. That's just how I draw folks until asked to do otherwise! But for these clients (and others in the past), the difference between three and four fingers is important.
So I guess I'm wondering how things are on y'all's end! Is the number of fingers on your characters' hands important to you, or is it something you chalk up to another artist's style?
I pay more attention than most to my characters fingers since both dragon me and my shark Inés have a distinctive color pattern of black markings on the top surface of the fingers, like... the inverse of a fingerless gloves pattern, almost. So I'd likely be the kind of gal who'd ask for a four finger edit
I never put much thought into the number of fingers, as evidenced by the fact that this post actually prompted me to count how many fingers my fursona has on the various art pieces i have of it. All of them where the hands are visible have three + thumb. When i imagine it in my minds eye however it is four + thumb. So yeah, i chalk it up to artists style.
I have however considered having 3 + two thumbs (one on each side of the hand) after seeing a character with hands like that and if i went for that it would be more important, as it would be a distinctive feature of it.
