I maintain that part of the reason why The Fifth Element achieves such an uncanny verisimilitude in its vision of a brightly dystopian future is the choice to have a single prolific fashion designer take a stab at imagining every level of fashion from the working class to the untouchable elites. It goes a long way to having everyone feel futuristic and uncanny, even folks in more traditional uniforms (like the Floston sailors or the military officers).
Absolutely - there's so much strengthened by having the world built out on a cross section of instances (i.e. clothing variables by type of person/role/class), rather than the kind of feudal cotton vs flamboyant/uniform type media that is all too common
Would genuinely love to be a fly on the wall for the series of decisions that led to the characterization and portrayal of Baby Ray. Huge amounts of implicit worldbuilding in that single performance, despite only two words of spoken dialogue.
