Editing and reposting shit I posted here last year, and elsewhere as well but might as well do it again and actually tag it this time
I fucking loathe the born this way narrative.
"Oh the poor things, they deserve pity and compassion, they were born broken"
which also leads to eugenics. Because if we're born this way, then prenatal screening would be used to exterminate.
Kinda funny that the attitude that queerness is only acceptable because "born that way, the poor things" never applies to other things that are protected, or even benefits that are entirely voluntary choices
Like religion.
Or bigotry.
Presentation and expression are not predetermined, and choice is important and affirming
And
Well, I'm aro. Lust and attraction affect me, not love like that, and it's so fucking often represented as direct analogue to cishet relationship structures
I actually fucking hate it.
"it's worth not oppressing because they can't help it, the poor things, they are wired that way"
Which
I'm fucking autistic
It's the same shit
If our existence is up for arguing
We've already fucking lost
A "queer question" being up for debate is bad
Oh but of course if you actually decide to diss actual choices
Religion for example
Oh no "deeply religious belief"
Oh no that's unassailable
A fucking chosen cultural identity is treated as more than inherent and unassailable, but any queerness, inherent, inborn, expressed or repressed is treated as something to fix
To eliminate
To exterminate
And that's the thing
I personally do not have a better alternative
I see its value as an entry point
But I fucking hate the way it frames queerness and opens it to extermination bullshit.
I do not think I chose to be queer. But I chose to stop trying to fit in cishet molds that did not work for me. I chose to be openly who I am. I choose to show myself as queer and let others know that I am queer.
I chose that I get to be me.
