It may interest you to know they were never intended to be used as national ID numbers and were designed to be moreso just account numbers for the social security program (pay into it for your working life, get income when you retire). It was only later that it started being used as the primary ID number for every citizen of the country. They are ill-suited to the purpose bc it's not even what they were supposed to be for
