speedrun.com has a pretty good (and free) open API. the left shows the amount of time saved (compared to the prior run by the same runner) versus the overall time for super mario 64 16-star runs on the nintendo 64. the right shows the world record progression for the same category and platform as a line over time, with all runs displayed as points.
i limited it to nintendo 64 because there was a lot of entries and that's what the streamer i was watching braktheman, but the right graph tells a story of the emergence of speedrunning as a broader interest and the rise in people collecting the nintendo 64. note there's a a huge number of entries that are not competitive whatsoever.
