Coincidentally my NAS drives are doing awful and I think it was from some poor connections. I did an rsync with checksums to verify the data on disk is still correct and it got very unhappy and uncovered problems and I had to fsck the filesystem multiple times. Cleaned the SATA connections in the drive enclosure and was able to finish an rsync but now I no longer trust this setup...
Edit from a month later: it was an incompatible RAM upgrade that was flipping bits randomly, I was eventually able to get my backups consistent again :'3
My backups are STILL not reliable, I switched to ZFS and every time I scrub it finds ~150 CKSUM errors per disk in my z1 zpool. I think it may be the disk enclosure with a SATA hub that the drives are in
