okay maybe I'm reading way too much into it but I feel Gran Turismo 4 is the perfect example of a pre 2007 financial crisis racing game?
it's a sort of automotive museum sandbox game that has one and only one set of events that is restricted and never ever tells you that you should be doing a, b or c, it hints suggestions to the player through its early game balance but never goes beyond that
it wants to show you stuff but is never heavy handed about it, if you want you can entirely ignore the museum and sandbox aspects and go through the game like a checklist
also, the way it shows you and references stuff has this kinda hopeful tone and outlook towards the future to it; and sometimes trades it for nostalgia notably with the rally events which I think are extremely indicative of that period of acceptance that rally's golden age had come to an end (the crowds running and bucking from the track as the cars approach? cmon there's no way that's only to show off from a graphics pov)
and finally through its overall presentation: the soundtrack is always upbeat and lively and the only hint of pompous classical music is in the game's intro (and it actually serves a purpose), the UI is colourful and functional, the goofy stuff like Coffee Break
when you compare GT4's UI to 5-6-S-7's UIs I feel like all this is jarring we went from these upbeat colourful menus to tiles everywhere, pseudo classical music and it's DAAAAAARRRRRRRKKKKKKKK not a fucking hint of light in those menus not to mention the sandbox aspect that has more or less vanished from GT7 from what I know of it

*not a diss against classical music i'm just beyond tired of this trend of putting dramatic epics over anything and everything motorsport

in reply to @aenore's post:

GT4 is so... White (as in it literally makes white its primary color), and clean, and bright, and just... Yeah everything came after that decided Dark Theme Forever, which accidentally made GT4 the one in my mind where I go "Ah yes the WHITE one" and it ended up making it stand out even more.

And that's on top of the many thoughts and memories and crapton of wishes a game like it would come back I'm trying not to over-write about
