i can't fucking believe i've just learned that a sim racing coaching service (Coach Dave Academy to not name it) teaches, of all things, the fucking string theory as an actual thing in an 80€ (excluding VAT) "lesson book". it is the single worst possible way to explain the relation between driver inputs and their effects on available grip because it dumbs down a very complex interaction in a way that cannot help the people it's destined to at all because it skips every single prerequisites to understanding this interaction.
but they went ahead and did that. again, in an 80€ (excluding VAT) book. i am actually floored.
i've said this before to people looking to properly learn and i'll keep saying it: driving a car fast is maths. you want to improve your driving, you go back to learning maths because it's maths all. the way. down. you can't cut corners in maths in the same manner you can't cut corners to learning driving. no, you don't need to know and solve in real time the equations for optimal tire slip or optimal aero load, but you sure as hell need to know the principles behind them.
this applies just as much to real life as it does to simulations and arcade racers! you can change the form all you want at the end of the day you still have four wheels and physics dictating what's the optimal way to use them which, in most cases, will remain exactly the same.
