maybe a hot take but i'm pretty sure every single fps that tried "rpgizing" its gameplay by adding Numbers™️ above the meatbags you're shooting at has only worsened the experience it was trying to convey

a dozen or so of playtime hours ago i had the thought of just disabling all this shit in Cyberpunk 2077: all damage numbers, enemy health bars, ammo counter and crosshair*. this is combined with mods that force manual reload, make you lose the ammo left in a discarded magazine, disable recoil recovery and improve blood and ragdolls.
the experience is suddenly brutally satisfying. i'm no longer tempted to look at the Numbers™️ or have my attention drawn by a useless healthbar pointlessly conveying that the gonk i'm shooting at is still standing.
my shotgun feels massively powerful at close range and i can tell whoever was on the receiving end is dead because one of their arms went flying and there's a hole in their chest; not because their healthbar disappeared after big Numbers™️ were displayed

*no shade if you feel the need to have the last two but for real just try at least removing the counter; you can't run out of ammo in this game so it's ideal to try

I know people have very polarizing opinions on Escape from Tarkov but I feel so much of its appeal would be lost if the combat was gamier. The lack of hit markers and damage numbers and killfeed/confirmation and the way your health is in the big menu full screen you have to open means the combat is so much more immersive and tense. If I’m hit I have to run for cover to see how bad. If I take a long range shot and the person drops I have to physically confirm if I killed them or if they just hit the deck and crawled off. One of many reasons I think folks find it so refreshing

I think of those I only have the ammo counter visible, but I'll try disabling it too next time.
Starting a new game this days is first disabling motion blur and most of the crap covering the screen. :/

It's a relief the game still holds up with all that info gone! I imagine something like borderlands where if you don't have that on screen then you have no idea if you're doing sensible damage to an enemy or just chipping away 0.1% with each shot, because it just doesn't give you diagetic feedback on that

it's awful because having those infos by default trains you to think it's the only feedback and to not notice anything else. you start thinking "i need it because how else will i know that i'm not doing damage to an enemy" and it never ever happens!! because it's not this kinda game!!!
this stuff is actually why i never got into the endgame content of Borderlands and always dropped them towards the end of the "main quest" or shortly after; at that point every enemy is a bullet sponge and it's just not that kinda shooter i'm into

I don't mind having that sort of info in this game specifically because the UI is said to be from your bionic eyes, but ooh why did I not think of that reloading mod you mentioned, definitely gonna try to find that!
