Pirelli is looking to expand the number of compounds in its selection in 2025 to address the number of street circuits Formula 1 now races on.

The tire supplier currently has six slick compounds it can pick from for each race weekend, with three nominated as the soft, medium and hard options at each venue. With the 24-race calendar including a wide range of track characteristics but a number of newer venues being street circuits — the latest being Las Vegas — Pirelli has been testing an even softer compound at Paul Ricard this week to try and suit the greater number of temporary tracks.

just one more tire compound bro i swear just one more tire compound we're gonna fix f1 racing bro just one more tire compound we're gonna fix f1

in reply to @aenore's post:

Pirelli has been very successful since re-entering F1 in 2011 in making sure that people never have a reason to shut up about the fucking tires (by constantly fiddling with tiny bullshit and making them more important than anything else)

i have nothing but contempt for that brand for the legacy it's leaving on motorsport through f1; ie the "well we'll just have two compounds, one significantly worse than the other, and that'll fix the racing in our championship" brainrot that is installing itself all around

If I had to be extremely glass full, I'd say it's good that they finally made everyone realize how important the tires are in racing. I was watching a race from 1990 and commentary was talking about how Ferrari preferred a different goodyear construction than other people and the teams had ended up using one construction in the front and another in the rear or something. So it's not like this shit is new.

But, yeah, artificial tire forumlas suck. It's kinda ok in something like BTCC maybe? Where they're already doing things like success ballast and so another "ok well one of your races today has to be in a slower car" but yeah they put that shit in everything and it sucks.

They're doing this as a reaction to the world's most stupid Monaco Grand Prix last week but it doesn't even work as a fix for that bullshit, there's always been stupid decisions in F1 but god I miss when it was at least fun overall
