I'm going to miss cohost for a million reasons but one thing I already find myself missing as I'm trying out bluesky is that Cohost is somehow the only social media web site that lets you post images without mangling them. Every other web site will compress your work, awkwardly crop it, shrink it down to the size of a postage stamp, make you chop your comics up into tiny pieces to be distributed across a dozen different posts in an awkward self-reply chain. It's fucking miserable.
I'm probably super biased, but imo "looking at images" is like 80% of the reason to even USE these fucking things. Getting images right should be step 1. Everyone is failing step 1. tumblr is the only other site that even comes close. its attachment system is divine. but it still compresses the shit out of your images even if they're 1 mb. You know that dumb little vaeolin / vaeolence comic I made a while ago? I STILL had to chop that one up for tumblr because even though tumblr is one of the rare few that handles formatting of tall images correctly, the compression somehow gets a million times worse for no reason the second you make an image that's taller than it is wide. And that's one of my short comics lol. Was using the image embed system on here a little tedious? sure. but you could do it. you could do it. You could make your images look the way you wanted them to on here. Nowhere else.
Thank you for not ruining my art, cohost.
Thank you for everything, cohost.
i adored using cohost to post pictures because of this. and with a 10Mb limit per file i could post ridiculously big jpg with no issue, in fact i chose to limit my pics to 2160px small side to have some downscaling anti-aliasing effect for the games particularly prone to aliasing like FFXIV. (i usually capture at 3600px small side currently)
this is also the main motivation behind making my own website even though it seems like a colossal undertaking to me, and i only really understood how one is structured last night thanks to one of my partners going through it with me. i want to have a simple to navigate place i can point to and say "this place chewed up the pic but you can find a proper version here" that isn't a mega.nz account or whatever else.
