highlights (emphasis mine):
Instead of recycling the iRacing safety rating system, we decided to spend some time researching if there was something better suited for the way people use SimGrid. We’re happy to announce that we think we have found a neat solution.
Inspired by other games with similar voting systems, players reported improved community spirit and fairer play.
If you encountered someone doing their best Pastor Maldonado impression, causing more accidents than performing overtakes, then you can vote them as “Crashy.” So now you have to race like everyone is watching.
With this system, we anticipate driving standards to improve across the board
However, if you do start racking up a lot of “Crashy” votes, then you probably should think about how you’re driving. If you continue to accumulate “Crashy” votes, then you will be timed out of the service for a set period, because at that point, it’s not an accident that you got that many “Crashy” votes.
this will never, ever be used in a malicious way. nope. nuh uh. no way. impossible. never happened before. won't happen. had the cishet white guys in charge at Simgrid talked to just about anyone who isn't a cishet white guy; they would have been told just how fucking terrible of an idea giving players the power to punish anyone is. or maybe they did and then promptly ignored the feedback. that happens a whole lot too.
they saw a system which only allows players to lift each other up (if they so choose) and thought really hard about how to make it instead about punishing others. with how bigoted motorsport and by extension simracing is as a whole, this is guaranteed to be used to further exclude minorities and vulnerable people from a hobby we're already generally excluded from.
i've been told by a community/league manager who raised the exact same issue internally that Simgrid replied that "they are keeping an eye on the data to make sure it's not misused". which. LOL. LMAO even. sure bud i believe you when every single platform out there routinely fails to notice when its systems are used against some people, particularly people of colour and trans people.
but hey it's fine! driving standards will improve! (they won't.) can't make an omelette etc
