robins (a hack of songbirds 3e) by snow

robins is a d20 based dungeon-crawler focused on exploring a post-apocalyptic city plagued by the dreams of the dead god Albion. robins are psychics attuned to the Last Frequency, a space outside of space made of technicolor sound and deafening color. defeat wayward projections, close the dream dungeons, and kiss pretty people and then... maybe the dream can die, little bird.

releasing soon...

so you've got the basic pitch above. I also have the gifts/curses handled

for those unaware, there isn't really a "class" system in songbirds 3e. there's no upgrade tree nor neatly segmented spellcaster/melee/support trinary. instead, songbirds has something more similar to the thought cabinet of Disco Elysium or the perks system in Fallout New Vegas - short mechanical changes and benefits that significantly alter the way your character relates to the world!

so what gifts and curses do robins have?

wintersbloom: a flower that grows in the shared dream of the last giant, said to grant the user knowledge of the giants-tongue. a robin formed from the arcane and wyrd. use giantstongue and speak raw force unto the world

  • you know two giantstongue words at character creation (see pg. xx)
  • while acting on a fantastic lie, you gain +2 to all rolls. when the truth is discovered, deal damage to whoever believed you
  • you always knows the exit in a dream.
  • your wrists cannot be chained – including friendship bracelets

scrapjacket: a bug that feeds on ambient psychic energy in dreams. a robin formed from shortcuts and bypasses. use hacks gathered in albums to make some magic happen

  • you know an album of hacks (see pg. xx)
  • you have a maximum inventory of 8 + KNOW. you hide your stuff (and your spells) in their mind. You can exceed your inventory by trading a memory – one-for-one. you don't get them back
  • 1/day you can memorize everything on a page or a USB by eating it
  • you can retrace your steps perfectly by walking backwards

twistbone: a root to be pushed under your tongue; the vivacity of life penetrating your body and erupting as twin horns in your skull. a robin formed from the love of life and death. wield your love for life as fuel for movement and death.

  • whenever you destroys an enemy, they take +2 on your next attack roll
  • 1/encounter you can send words of encouragement to an ally – that ally adds 1d10 to their next roll
  • whenever a you dance, you can feel the weakest thing in a room (person, creature, object, or concept)
  • a twistbone’s horns are extremely sensitive to changes in heat and air pressure. they are also sensitive to being touched lightly

greenhome: a fungus-grass that grows in the rotting brain of the last giant in the center of the city. a robin formed from decay natural and urbane. the personification of decay is your sometimes lover (with a bad sense of boundaries)

  • you can trade age for power. for every two years expended, you can gain advantage on a roll. your trade can produce more powerful effects, but you have to talk to your lover first
  • 1/session you can scry information about the future in the viscera of the dead – this can be bones, guts, or crumbling buildings
  • you can speak to plants, animals, fungus, and concrete
  • your lover can pass messages between other greenhornes – unless she’s pissed with you.

anti-song: not a drug, but an almost supernatural feeling of un-belonging – a literal break from reality. a robin formed from rage and despair. fracture reality to disappear and reappear with a broken edge

  • 1/round you can slip outside reality and reappear somewhere nearby – usually, within sight of where you disappeared.
  • when surprising someone, take +2 on the next roll against them
  • you can hide small objects outside of reality, but it can’t stay for longer than ten minutes without turning into something completely different. this also applies to people
  • you’re the last person to be noticed in a room

holyholy: a drug, but also an intense feeling of belonging and sexual awakening. a robin formed of minds and bodies made one. a network of lovers buttresses your mind and body

  • you know two poems at character creation
  • 1/session you can ignore all incoming damage by spreading the pain throughout your network. if you use this ability to avoid massive damage, someone in your network leaves
  • when you take the orgy downtime with your network, you always refill to maximum hp.
  • you can feel the memory of love in a room – take +2 when acting on this information

hatchback: not a drug, but the physical experience of being hit by a car from another world and arriving in the city. a robin formed from steel and trauma. take on another body to be called when in need

  • 1/session gain 20 hp armor as you place a small key into your chest and transform into the car that brought you here. you cannot change back until the armor hp is depleted
  • while un-transformed, you have advantage on discerning lies from city-folk
  • you can fit four people inside you while transformed
  • you have +2 when speaking frankly to other travelers

selfsame: a drug made from the dried soul of one’s own body. a robin formed from self-love and self-loathing. summon a violent protector made from you

  • 1/round you may perform a close move at range as you send your other-self to do the dirty work. you must always convince your other-self to obey your commands except when committing violence
  • gain +2 when using your other-self to pressure someone to do what you want
  • your other-self lives in your shadow and will alert you if something is following too close
  • your otherself doesn’t have HP, and you don’t show up in mirrors

deadman: not a drug, but the term for people who went beyond the edge of the city and into the unknown. a robin formed from desperation and curiosity. an elaborate suit contains your rotting reality

  • you may remove a piece of your suit to expose your unreal flesh. anyone who beholds your body takes damage. they may save to take half
  • you can float on air, but not very quickly and not very far
  • +2 when dropping a massive bomb on someone – truth or otherwise
  • you eat and speak through the palm of your suit’s hand

thorium-9: arguably a drug, but also an element forged in the heart of the city's nuclear reactor– you witnessed its explosion and took a piece of it with you. a robin with a wish. imbibe the fracture to rewrite reality once

  • 1/forever you can eat the piece of creation you carry with you and make a wish to change anything about the world. these changes are permanent and cannot be saved against. do not wish for more wishes
  • the piece of creation speaks to you in quiet moments – but never while you sleep. it will tell you sweet lies in the same breath as terrible truths

so I've been working on this game for a little over two months... I think I've missed the songbirds jam? whoops lol.

I'm working next on filling out the traveling table! which will be fun!
