Welcome, each and all, to this new edition of Cohost Draws!

For this edition, I asked participants to share places that are near and dear to their hearts! Be they physical or virtual, real or fictional… As long as they evoked a sense of nostalgia, or longing, then that was fair game!

Curious to get into this mix of landscapes and memories? Then let's not make you wait any longer!

Art of a loft, illuminated through a large window, filled with toys and books.

The loft in my grandparents' house.

No matter where you look, you're surrounded by warm wood paneling. There's a soft old rug and three generations of children's books and toys. A panel at the bottom of the only window can be held open or closed with a rough old brick that has been doing that job longer than I've been alive.

I remember playing and reading here, and being able to listen to my grandparents talking quietly downstairs.

Illustration of Jack Frost, the good old Atlus mascot!

When I think of a "special place", it's not a particular landscape I think of. It's a feeling.

That feeling I first experienced in my early days with the Pokemon games, and as I grew older and fell out of love with them, with many other series. A feeling of being lost in, and utterly engrossed by, another world.

That's why for my entry I decided to doodle Jack Frost from the Shin Megami Tensei meta-series, as few other franchises come close to achieving that feeling with as much depth or ease.

Pixel art of a computer covered in stickers

This machine is 10 years old. It's kinda embarrassing to say that this is my comfort place, even with all these years.

It's where I get interested in games beyond the console games I owned, where I meet my most beloved friends ever who to this day are supporting me so much, and where I discovered my true dream of just creating stuff, like games.

To this day it works, somehow, but its final days are arriving, so I made this. I use it practically all day, every day, and it has kind of ruined my life... but that's my fault. Computers are good, I think.

Cool machine, thank you for functioning.

Watercolor art of Lucie, standing in the middle of a gorgeous wooden gate.

My special place is this "gate" at a small local park, with white roses growing on it.

It was one of the last places where I walked my dog Lucie before she passed last year. Going there always brings back memories of her, and a few tears.

I took a photo similar to that that became a symbol of her departure for me. In it, she stands before the gate and waits for me. Here I made her stand just past the threshold and left the scenery beyond the gate blank.

I chose to paint it with watercolors because of the delicacy of this technique, and how it can make things seem ethereal.

Illustration of a rocking chair under the sunset

Growing up, the front porch held a special place in our home. We would gather there to play games, ride out thunderstorms, and relish a sunset. As an adult, I still get to retire to my own front porch - albeit, one that is far smaller and more humble than what I grew up with. I sit in my rocker and nurse a beer as I take in the sights and sounds of a sunset: shocks of orange meeting subdued violet, crickets chirping and toads croaking. It brings me peace and helps fill my soul.

As for my drawing, I'm not well-versed in still life or realism, normally focusing on abstraction. Basically, I couldn't draw a porch and be pleased with it. So I settled on a simple rocker and laced in some abstraction to represent a sunset.

Art of young Bass, running on the lawn after Pokémon cards. I tried to go for a Swapnote-esque approach for the colors!

Let me take you back to a windy summer day, not long past the turn of the millennium. Growing up with the clashing sounds of Lorie's "Je serai (ta meilleure amie)" and Cowboys Fringants' "Toune d'automne"... Far from realizing the incredible change that we were living through, with the web only beginning to take more and more place in our lives.

No, this was still an era when people could still be blessed with boredom, with time to figure out what we wanted to do. On one such day, not being one of the cool kids with a Game Boy, or even an N64, I was searching for another hobby I could sink my teeth into. So a friend came over, eager to show me how to get into a special card game. We'd already tried the new hotness, Yu-Gi-Oh together, but... The cards were too complicated for me. I wasn't having much fun.

This time would be different, however. Because the cards he brought over were tied to a game I loved to watch people play -- he was bringing trading cards with Pokémon on them! So he came over to my place, and we set out to play on a table my parents set on the front lawn.

And we're having fun. A lot of fun, even. Until... disaster strikes, and a strong gust of wind sends all the cards flying! Dumbfounded for a while, we then start a mad hunt for them, laughing all the while. Sure showed us for playing outside -- how come my parents didn't warn us!

Sometimes, when I find my mind wandering, I'm back there. Laughing, running under the breeze, on the lawn at my old place, the smells of apples and grilled sausages filling the air.

I'm pretty sure we didn't end up catching up with all the cards that flew away that day. Maybe we made someone else happy!

Art of a dimly lit forest, a clearing through the grass being created by a lantern.

Me and my brother used to spend a lot of time sharing ideas but I don't remember a lot of locations, apart from this one: a forest full of 'ghost grass' that you had to scare away with a light or it would eat you.

The nostalgic aspect is maybe less to do with the place itself, and more with the general idea of workshopping concepts with my brother, which we don't really get to do anymore.

And that's all we got for this edition of Cohost Draws!! Thanks a bunch to everyone who participated, your art and stories have been a real pleasure. :eggbug-smile-hearts:

And to all readers, feel free to share your own stories about places that are near and dear to you! Or maybe take a look at the first edition, Love at Second Sight, if you're interested?

in reply to @TheBlondeBass's post:

It was fun participating in this and all the entries are awesome !
Also I learned that Lorie got exported as far as Québec ... On behalf of my fellow countrymen I present my excuses to the Québecois. 🤣

They all look great, awesome job everyone!

I decided this theme was too risky for me to think about, it could easily lead me into a bad mental state, but I really hope I can participate in the next one :eggbug-smile-hearts:
