Hot off the press is Cohost Draws the second !
Lovingly hosted by @TheBlondeBass !
I submitted the above piece, let's talk about it a bit !
(Trigger warning though about a pet's death)

First the description :

My special place is this "gate" at a small local park with white roses growing on it.
It was one of the last places where I walked my dog Lucie before she passed last year and going there always brings back memories of her, and a few tears.
I took a photo similar to that that became a symbol of her departure for me. In it she stands before the gate and waits for me, here I made her stand just past the threshold and left the beyond of the gate blank.
I chose to paint it with watercolors because of the delicacy of this technique and how it can make things seem ethereal.

So yeah, I guess I'm still missing her a lot nearly a year later. The photo I'm talking about can be found in this post.
Eh, heck, here it is actually :

I am relatively happy with this piece. I think it looked better when I didn't have so much stuff around the gate but I really wanted to make the blank space beyond it distinct.
I also didn't want to leave any pencil lines, to accentuate the "ethereal" nature that I wanted to give the image.
Now if I were to do it again I think I would take more liberties with the model. I'd probably do the roses bigger and arrange the landscape around to give a better sense of depth.
One annoying thing with watercolors, in my experience, is that the more subtle nuances don't show when scanned. It's a headache to make a digital image of them.
I think that photography is basically the only way but it's hard to find the lighting and settings to get truthful colors, especially if you're doing it all from a phone.

Watercolors are an interesting technique for sure, the results can be beautiful whether intentional or not. It's also very easy to have nearly irrepairable accidents. Every stroke you do will be visible unless you dab it out very quickly, delays aren't tolerated and you can't really cover up, you can distract at best.
I think that in the future I want to try and do more watercolor paintings without sketching things with a pencil first.

in reply to @R-L-Z's post:

I absolutely love your piece. I think adding more around the gate to highlight the negative space was brilliant, and came off beautifully. Yours was my favorite piece of the bunch - not that it's a competition, obviously, but it really moved me, and is a stunning work of art. Thank you for sharing.
