thursday again! might just be when we do these from now on. who knows

only one change this week but it’s a big one: you can now silence posts to fully prevent them from appearing in your timeline!

this is the first part of work we’re doing around de-duplicating shares in your timeline. we know this is something lots of our users want, as it’s the behavior they’re used to from twitter. there’s UX challenges we need to solve here, but post silencing lays some of the ground work we need for this.

you can silence a post from the Meatball Menu and review posts you’ve silenced from your settings page. the most recent post in the thread will be silenced, so if you want to get rid of all potential thread branches, you can silence the original post. this change also fixes a bug where deleted posts would leave a tombstone when they were shared; if all posts in a thread were deleted, the thread will no longer appear.

we’ll be making more changes and improvements to post display soon; it’s one of our big overall goals. we welcome feedback on this and you can post it on our support forum!

Thanks for this!

In this vein: it would be really cool to have a setting that limits how long of a post will show before truncating with “read more”. A lot of the pain I feel around duped posts is when a doctoral thesis with a break at the very bottom gets shared a bunch of times. Being able to just, cap those early, would be nice.
