happy monday, coposters! after getting some feedback, we're considering making some minor changes to how CW and adult content posts operate.

we've gotten feedback that, especially for adult content, it's sort of impossible to guess what will be behind the clickthrough. our thoughts on this are to show the post title, tags, or both.

we wanted to solicit feedback from y'all about if this seems like a good solution or if there's other suggestions how to handle this. you can reply in the comments or, if you don't wanna say anything publicly, email us at support@cohost.org with the subject "CW Feedback".

that's all for now! thanks for using cohost :host-love:

in reply to @staff's post:

Tags 100% should be shown. Absolutely no reason not to show the tags. Makes it very clear what kind of post it is that way. Especially also content warnings on an adult post should show up with the adult content warning so it's not a double click-through (unless you have adult content warnings disabled).

I'm not 100% on the title being shown. I think that it makes a lot of sense but also does sort of cause content leakage if you're like, at work or something and don't want someone seeing over your shoulder "BIG BUSTY LADIES CLICK HERE TO VIEW" in big bold letters. Like essentially if we normalized the expectation that the title shows, people would just have to choose titles which are descriptive but not in and of themselves Adult enough to be classified as Adult Content. I think that that does limit posting creativity a little. At the same time though, I do find that I want to see the title most of the time, and it makes a lot of intuitive sense that it should show. On other websites it's also often the case that adult content warnings will say like "This video: How To Make Your Man Cum With a Grapefruit, is restricted to viewers age 18+" "Mistress Makesyoucum is an 18+ only page" etc. so I think it would probably be fine to show the title.

Also if the "disable adult warnings" setting is made per-page rather than per-account then this is less of an issue since you can just follow all the porn accounts from your AD page and disable the warnings on there but keep them enabled on your main

yeah i agree with the other comments; tags being visible would be good. a problem i've noticed with having adult content behind cws is that people will be like....really horny in the cw text?? on mister don it leads to me telling people "please provide accurate but not unduly sexual content warning text" which is ridiculous

content warnings and the adult flag should be shown at the same time

tags could be hit or miss - sometimes they can be used as a part of the post itself, meaning that displaying them could bypass both adult content and cws despite potentially needing them, so id keep them behind the click through

i do think the title should be visible though

I wonder if there’s a way to make tags - or even a subset of cw tags - more up front and visible if there’s an adult content tag? I think the existing tags at the bottom of posts works well for normal posts, but I would rather have that info surfaced more blatantly for hidden posts

In addition to what everyone else is saying about showing tags and titles, I'd like to suggest being able to both show and hide stuff. Sometimes I want to be able to see the thing behind the curtain, but don't need it to be visible forever, you know? I think this would be possible with a summary/details tag kind of thing. Closed would show the warning, open would show the content, and you can go between them

yeah, was coming here to say this about the adult/spoiler systems. my expectations from mastodon of being able to click the button again to re-collapse the post were thrown off by the button taking me to an assc page explaining what adult content is instead :P (the only solution i know for this at present is to simply refresh the entire page, which is slow)

Definitely in favor of at least showing the tags. I'd prefer to see the title too (because not everyone tags their posts!) but it's understandable if you have to leave it out.

I'm quite new here so please excuse me if I bring up something that has been discussed previously. In addition, as one might guess by my name, this subject is quite relevant to my interests especially including not having my content be shown to those that do not wish to view it.

My first question is in reaction to those that say they want tags to be shown. Those running cohost will know best but let's say the tags are explicit words; the type not allowed on U.S. radio and TV. Is it OK to expose people to the f-word even if the f-ing is not shown?

To be clear, I am not asking that to be contrary to those saying they would prefer to see the tags. I just want to be certain it has been thought through that NSFW words would still appear on viewers' screens even if the "action" is hidden. After all, if we take NSFW literally, many bosses would be as against the f-word as the act itself.

In case that is an issue that has not been considered, perhaps there could be a brief drop-down menu where one could choose the basic reason why a post is NSFW. Perhaps "Nudity, violence, language, and generally inappropriate" would be a start for such a list.

Again, those are just some thoughts from a new user but one with many years of experience in the NSFW field. I look forward to seeing what other have to say and am confident the devs will make the correct decision for cohost.

I think tags showing would be very helpful, and I'd also like title showing but could live without it. If possible, it would be great if you could choose your own setting for whether to show tags and/or title.

Alternatively, you could give the adult warning a fill in the blank description section, like how the content warnings work. I like this because it lets the poster do whatever they want with the tags and title, be it super explicit or leaving them blank.

From the perspective of someone almost exclusively posting adult content here's my feedback:

I dont like that the content warning and adult warning create "titles" on posts without titles. Or how tags have a white background that I cant change with css. I think CW and tags should be in the offwhite part of the post that isnt the post. This bloat makes every one of my posts really long to scroll through and I'm working in a visual medium here.

I think the adult content settings should be per page so people can set up After Dark pages easily.

I think "blacklists" on tags that give content warnings just for you would be a big help. (They're also helpful when a game comes out or a fandom becomes too annoying) Everyone has a different line and i think showing all tags before the CW button would help but it can go further.

I would not mind a super blurry filter over the post that maintains its intended size. It's easier to guess how interested I'd be in it and it keeps my entire page from just being nothing but the adult content warning text over and over.

P.S. thanks for listening to feedback about this stuff. I feel like I'm allowed to participate in online society for the first time

imo showing both tags and headlines is better. While there is the possibility that a headline will show something that would have been hidden, I think the benefit of more information about whats under the TW is more helpful here. It would also be cool to have a system where users can choose always show, always hide, or clickthrough on a tag by tag basis. But that would be a lot of work

not the question at hand, +1 for having CWs be re-hideable after clicking "show"-- sometimes i just want a quick glimpse out of curiosity and it ends up not being something i actually want to see haha

i tend to not engage very much with NSFW posts so i'm not sure, but how descriptive to tags tend to be? would it be clearer to have something like a dropdown with somewhat more specific categories-- at least, maybe how explicit something is? i'm also not sure what drawbacks there are to just having a custom entry field like there is for CWs-- or even including both in the same framework, like masto, though you've probably already considered that

I'm in favor of both!

there are some cases where I don't necessarily want a drawing to show up in the tag of the show/game/whatever it's from, but I still want people to know what's behind the filter so the title is good for that. I know this can get tricky if the title/tags are also considered nsfw though...
