tech startups are almost never profitable - and stock prices only reflect what "the market" (e.g, investors) thinks of them, rather than much to do with their actual success. instead, tech startups subsist entirely on rounds of funding they wring out of wide-eyed investors who then take the gamble of whether or not the Line Goes Up, which leads to the bizarre obviously -detrimental behaviours you see like this, because instead of doing things that would make money in reality, they do things to nudge that line up or down.

tbh they also haven't been TRYING for profitability for a long time - them massively hiring-up and acquiring other companies like weta(?!?!?!) certainly hasn't helped them stay in the black

Ygotta separate profit from stock. it sounds weird, but its more like. Stock is like HP, honestly. except its like if HP could be influenced by how people thought of you, as well as how you're actually doing.

what money you make doesn't matter, so long as people THINK you're cool, and good. Stock doesn't even exist as any sort of profit for the body, its profit for the myriad of alien voices all vying to basically Twitch Plays Pokemon the body. and the more stock they own, the more their Twitch Chat Message matters. NOW understandably, the "people in charge" are the people with the most stock. but again, that doesn't mean the body is healthy.

so what they're saying is, they haven't been making decisions for a healthy body, but they LOOK very healthy, so that HP was big n strunk.

I know what Melon said makes sense but I wanted to say my dumb shit version of it too

So much wrong with just the sentiment that it wasn't done maliciously lol. For one, the reason described is absolutely malicious! They were trying to destroy a competitor! For the other, what they did is malicious by its very nature. It's straight up just landlord shit.

“That’s what all of the big boys are going to do,” they added. “A lot of the outcry from indie devs was kind of misplaced really. None of them are going to get anywhere near the $1m anyway.”
Not that what they're saying is wrong (it is tho), but this condescending tone is so uncalled for.
Plus $1m would be like a 3 year dev cycle for a 10 person team at less than 35k a year, plenty of mid sized indies will go over that
(edited because i really cant math)
