Sometimes when I talk to people about being a mom or a teacher, they’ll reply with, “I don’t think I’m responsible enough to have someone depend on me.”

To be honest, I feel that way, too. I know a lot of teachers who are afraid of steering their students the wrong way, and parents who are worried about whether they’re raising their children well.

None of us magically have all the answers. What matters is that we’re willing to rise to the challenge of bettering ourselves for the people we’ve promised to care for.

I get that response so frequently with regards to teaching, too. And it often feels so tricky with music because at the core I'm attempting to teach somebody how to better express their own soul -- a task which feels so daunting and dubious when you think about it that way.

I think you're so right about not having the answers. To me, teaching always feels so much more like a conversation or a dance than anything else. It's always so very fluid an dynamic.
