I Can't Tell the Color of your Eyes

When I look at you
Into your eyes, I can't tell
Are they blue, or green, or
Some other shade closer to gray

What color of yours is true?
The thoughts churn, I watch as your mind fell
Trying to see for yourself
I wonder if it differs day-to-day
It seems to elude even you

Why don't you know? Why can't you?
Why can't I? I think it's fine
We can't see what I see
I can't see what you see
But I am, I can
But, no, wait...

It's hard to see her
Echos of what will be, visible in what was
You don't see it?
I didn't either

No, not that. I'm not talking about that.
Good guess. It's half-right.
It helps to imagine a cat
Barely able to be seen, just out of sight

She begs to be free
But it's not just me
I know you can't see
I Know, you can't see
It's okay, it will be

I hear the sound of a wonderful, expansive chord
Many notes, mostly high, some low, some close to each other
Suspended in time, stretched
Ringing, held, frozen, a single moment
Like the feeling of astonishment converted to sound
Like the feeling of seeing another self
You hear it too

I know you're scared
I can feel it, I get it
And I'm sorry
But I understand, more than you know
Take your time, you have all of it to grow

When I look into your eyes
When I look, straight ahead at the mirror
Into your eyes
I can't tell what that color is
I might never know
I might never get to understand
But, your eyes

They look beautiful

I love you
