people keep saying webp doesn't have Any use, that it's just Google giving the world an image format just to try to further cement their power, but webp does have at least One use

its lossless compression is better than png. its lossy compression is better than jpeg. it's two improved formats in one.

AND it utilizes open-source video technology (MPEG sucks way worse than Google et al. when it comes to hoarding video tech patents)

don't get me wrong, google SUCKS, but unfortunately they did like 1 good thing and that thing is open-source webm video/imagery

though what i Really don't like is how AV1's image format could've been put into webp as well BUT IT WASN'T, like how AV1 video can be put in webm files =.=

they're storing AVIF in HEIC containers which IS LITERALLY GIVING INTO MPEG'S HORRIBLE DEMANDS OF CHARGING FOR OVERPRICED STANDARDS DOCS

AV1 (AVIF) is, fun fact, more efficient than current webp (VP9) (edit: okay maybe avif isn't always more efficient, but av1 (video) is, idk it's complicated), and is also a completely free format, but they messed up SO BADLY on the container decision which is why even more people see webp as useless...

WEBP COULDVE BEEN WAY MORE USEFUL, IT ACTUALLY COULDVE BEEN, BUT NO, BITCHES HAD TO BE GREEDY

GOD I HATE CORPORATIONS!!!!!!! GRAAAHH

all i know is that webp allowed me to upload my profile's header image losslessly, since the png version was above 1 MiB but the webp version allowed me to squeak in juuust under the limit while losing zero quality
